The book foretells the grim climax of man’s proud ambitions to rule the world. The key verse of Daniel – as expressed by the humbled King Nebuchadnezzar – reiterates the sovereignty of God in the affairs of all mankind – “to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men” (4: 17b).
